The interaction between the artists and the freshly arrived group of participants for week 2 creates a completely different atmosphere. At the Nomadic Island camp, the daily creative activities roll now easily, without any need of directives. The artistic ideas continue to develop and follow slowly but surely their own implementation process. Our residency would be nothing without the precious and creative work of Antoine and Sara, our kitchen chefs. Their art of preparing food integrates fresh organic vegetables from Geméisguart CIGL Esch-sur-Alzette, some typical Italian cheese, saved food from the anti-waste activity made possible by Foodsharing Luxembourg asbl. Meat is not missing either, with a 10% of participation rate to the menu. Vegan, vegetarian and ‘flexitarian’ are the available eating choices our cooks make possible. Amazing overflowing energy the first week at Nomadic Island camp. Our first youngster group – coming from the Maison de Jeunes Bettembourg – have been very active since the first day. Valentin’s teepee was constructed within few hours of work. Stéphane’s pirate installation also found many devoted participants. Guided Tours on Saturday welcomed different visitors from all over and our lunch-discussion on Wednesday was a pleasant moment of exchange with, among others, Pascal Lazerus from La Bonneterie Asbl, who is the project leader of the "Soubresaut du Castor" as part of Esch2022 in the Commune de Sanem.
Our first Lunch Discussion this past Wednesday July 20 was a success with a delicious meal served by Gastronomica Luxembourg. We have two more dates coming up, on July 27 and August 3, 2022.
Reservation via [email protected] and please bring the 10€ for your meal in cash. Not only have we spent the last days preparing the camp site, we were also out and about to spread the word about the Nomadic Island project. The interest and enthusiasm that journalists have shown in the project has reinforced our belief in the meaning of it. A big shoutout to Nora Schloesser from the Luxemburger Wort who met us on the (still empty) camp site last week for an interview.
Not only are the workers from the commune making our campsite look nice, they also make it safe and accessible for all of you to visit. And made sure we had running water and electricity. rollingertec s.a. – technologie & construction bois provided us with their leftover wood and materials for our artists and participants to work with and bring their creations to life. Special thanks to the CIGL Hesperange for making this beautiful sign. When you pass it, make sure to take a picture in front of it and remember to tag us if you post it on your socials (IG: @nomadic_island22; FB: @nomadicisland22).
So it does indeed take a village – or an island – to prepare everything for this project, but we can not wait to share the result with you all when you visit us! Now that the residency is approaching, we are gathering all the materials our artists need for their creations. One of the artists, Cristina Picco, and her team of participants will be using t–shirts, as a symbol of the textile industry. Together, they are going to work on and around textiles embarking on a collective and site specific transformation process. We are very grateful to AKABO Buttek – Luxembourg's N°1 Fair Fashion Store selling only ethical responsible fashion – for sponsoring the shirts. Shoutout to Karel - owner of Akabo Buttek - for supporting our Nomadic Island project.

It is a platform for experimentation involving a group of artists on one side and a group of local residents on the other. For a fixed period of three weeks, this experimental platform will offer spaces for creation and exchange where synergies will emerge around the theme of alternative ways of living and working. In the context of this residency, Nomadic Island is looking for a head chef and a second chef to provide meals for the community. RESIDENCY THEME: Alternative ways of living and working. The Nomadic Island project seeks to provoke thought around the growing difficulties our society faces in its current lifestyle based on overconsumption. While raising awareness about our standards of living and the social and environmental footprint we leave behind is one of the goals of this experiment, the existence of this temporary community also aims to raise awareness about possible innovative low environmental impact lifestyles, emphasizing the prospect of a more sustainable existence from different perspectives: social, economic, ecological and cultural. Despite the fact that the information campaigns on the fight against global warming do not talk about it enough, food has a considerable impact on the environment. Indeed, it is possible to reduce - simply and effectively - our greenhouse gas emissions by tackling what is on our plate. How can we do this? By favouring seasonal, organic and local products. But also by eating less meat and more vegetables, legumes and fruits. CANDIDATE Nomadic Island is looking for a head chef and a second chef who can respond to the participative and collaborative philosophy. Indeed, on site, artists and participants will contribute to the realization of the meals. The organization will include the participation and collaboration of 11 artists, a group of 10 young people (aged 13 to 19) and a group of 10 adults, local residents. The project is intended to be a constructive and educational experience for all participants. The chef will have to be creative and a good manager. They must be able to delegate, supervise and coordinate all the missions around the realization of the daily meals. Previous experience with participatory projects is considered an important skill, although not mandatory. The Chef will also be expected to provide meals that respect the ethics of alternative lifestyles and workplaces by offering organic meals made with seasonal ingredients. The Executive Chef will assist the Chef in providing meals that respect the ethics of alternative lifestyles and work by providing organic meals with seasonal ingredients. It is highly recommended that the chef and the second cook have worked together before and have a good working relationship. As a Chef, you will:
